How to find tranquillity and a hint of wilderness on the Wirral

It is possible at certain times to find places in West Wirral where you can be alone in nature. One such is 'The Dungeon' or Dungeon Wood. The top of the path can be approached from Thurstaston from the North (near Thurstaston church) or from the junction between Oldfield drive and Oldfield Road. Both approaches give good views across the Dee and a great sense of space.

The path is marked and wends its way through a narrow wood and stream.

In spring you will see woodland flowers such as these :

The sides of the stream are usually quite damp. Last March I saw these beautifully rich red fungi growing out of a fallen log under that moss. If anyone can identify them I'd be delighted to know.

Eventually you get to the head of a narrow gorge surrounded by what could be ancient woodland on its steep sides. It reminds me of trekking in Nepal and even further back in time walking through Jesmond Dene on the way to university. Care is needed as you make your way to the bottom as there are some long drops.

Spend some time above the shallow cave you are effectively up in the branches of the trees on the slopes. A good time to come is dusk when you will hear the birds settling down and see the bats come out.

Carry on down towards the Dee and the path crosses pasture fields with these magnificent oaks.
